What to check before you pick one

  1. Reliability after updates. Read the newest reviews, not the average. Missed days are the most common complaint in this category.
  2. Gaps are visible. The app should show days with no record so you can fix them, because days you cannot prove may count as New York days. Hodgson Russ
  3. Correct day rule. For New York, any part of a day counts, and one date can count for two states. CBIZ
  4. Export for your CPA. PDF and CSV with every day, and ideally a way to show the records were not edited later.
  5. Manual entry and import. You will need to add days from before you installed the app.
  6. Privacy. Check whether location history stays on your phone or goes to the company's servers.
  7. Support. Check whether the developer answers reviews and support email.

Questions people ask

What is the best app to track days for state tax residency?

It depends on what you need. Domicile365 has the most ratings and features for CPAs at $19.99 a month; cheaper apps such as iReside and Days in State cost $20–45 a year. Check recent reviews for tracking problems and make sure the app exports every day for your CPA.

Do I need an app, or is a spreadsheet enough?

A spreadsheet works if you fill it in every day and keep third-party proof such as card and phone records. An app logs location automatically, which helps if you travel often. Either way, auditors want proof for each day. Hodgson Russ
